Bernice Koontz, 81, Wheatland, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar. The daughter of Alexander and Mamie (Walker) Lewis, she was born in Freeman, North Carolina August 22, 1929.

Bernice had been a resident of Hickory County since 1991. She was a homemaker and worked at the McCarthy Senior Center in Wheatland and attended Wheatland Church of the Nazarene.

She and Richard Lee Koontz were married December 15, 1978. He preceded her in death December 9, 2004.

Twelve brothers and sisters also preceded her in death.

Survivors include 4 children and their spouses, Linda and Paul Morgan, Blue Springs, Diane and Tom Krumm, Shawnee, KS, Denise and Peter Catalano, Kansas City and Jerry and Debbie Kraft, Independence; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; 1 great-greatgrandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Wheatland Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Edward Stovall and Chaplain James Friend officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 PM in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville under the direction of Murray Funeral Home, Humansville. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 AM Wednesday at the church.
